3 Protein alternatives for non-meat eaters



Something about motherhood tends to highlight certain values, concerns and even lifestyle decisions. Last year as I brought my first child into mother Earth, I embarked on a few changes, not to say I stuck to all of them, but each one was worth a chance. One of my major changes was going on a plant based diet in effort to raise a plant based child and to do my bit for the environment. The journey was pretty challenging and definitely worth the try, although we are not vegan, our plates consist of 90% plants...


One of my biggest concerns was PROTEIN! With a hectic lifestyle, consistent workouts and a balanced diet, protein is a must not just for me, but all of us.




A common question and concern when wanting to go plant-based is how one will get sufficient protein. Wonder no more because we’re here to share THREE different sources of protein.




SOMETHING FOR A COOKED MEAL


Beans


Not only are beans an important staple food across cultures but beans such as: kidney, black, pinto, and most other varieties of beans contain high amounts of protein per serving.

Chickpeas, also known as ‘garbanzo’ beans, are another type of bean also with high protein content.

Enjoy a cooked meal by adding beans as the protein after tossing them on a medium heat pan with spices of choice. From a bean soup, to a chickpea salad and even a burrito bowl, enjoy beans in various ways.







SOMETHING FOR A SNACK


Nuts and Seeds

Not only are nuts and seeds a great source of fibre and healthy fats, they are a great source of protein as they contain a sufficient amount of it.

When selecting nuts and seeds, ensure you always go for the raw and unsalted types. These are a great on-the-go snack, to to mention healthy.


SOMETHING FOR MULTI-USE


Chia Seeds

A must have in the pantry are Chia Seeds! These versatile seeds are very high in protein are a great to toss is most things.

Make a great smoothie, chia pudding and even sprinkle them on oats, chia seeds are an absolute protein must have!


As most of us are taking this time to either fast, detox or simply make healthier changes, Protein is an essential.
